What to do if Your Email Gets Hacked

If someone has stolen your password and is using your account, take action and take steps to stop it from happening again.

If your account has been compromised, these are some best practices to follow:

If you still have access to the account, change your password immediately. Inform your contacts that your account has been hacked and to ignore any strange emails from your address. If you are having trouble accessing your account, go to your email provider’s website for instructions on recovering your account. Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google all have guides on their sites. Any email or internet service provider should have guides as well.

Your account may have been hacked through malicious software, so scan your computer for malware and viruses with a security program. We recommend using a built in Microsoft security program, Malware Bytes or one of the many free programs that are available.

Another important step in keeping your accounts secure is to always update your computer and devices with the latest security updates.

Check your mail settings to make sure nothing has been changed, for instance, copies of emails set to forward to an unknown email address, unfamiliar entries in your address book, or new links or information added to your signature. W

While you are in your settings, take the time to change and update your security questions and answers. You should also set up two-factor authentication if it is available from your mail provider. This will make you provide a code or acknowledge a login attempt on another device after your enter your password, but that will help keep your account secure.

If you were able to secure your account and have taken all of these precautions, you should be able to use the same email address for existing accounts. But you still need to go into all of the accounts associated with the address and change all of your logins and passwords.

And as a precaution, you should never access your accounts on a public network unless you are using a virtual private network.

There is never a guarantee that you can keep your accounts from being hacked, but, by using these best practices, you are keeping your accounts as safe as possible.
